The Basics
What is WiFi?
Wifi technolgy or working wirelessly is basically connecting your computer to a network using no cables. It uses radio frequency, transmitting data from one point to another using radio signals. You also need to be in the wireless network range for this to work.
What is a Wifi hotspot?
It is basically a venue that offers WiFi access. So airports, hotels or more importantly Statbucks
What do you need?
- a wireless PC card – this can either be built in to the laptop or inserted into the PC card slot.
- a laptop
The Important Bits
How do you connect to a wireless network?
- Locate a wireless network – right click the wireless network connection in the taskbar. Click view available wireless networks.
- Connect to an available wirless network - click the name of the network you want to connect to in the wireless network connection dialogue box, click connect.
- Acquiring network address – once done you will be connected and ready to do your emails or check out www.girlgeekchic.com !
Why WiFi tho’ ?
- Convenience – at home, you can move from room to room with your laptop, use it on the sofa or at the ktichen table. In the office, you can take it to meetings and print things out for colleagues etc, work in starbucks if you fancy a latte – always handy then!
- Increased productivity – you can work while youre on the go, so on the train, airport lounges rather than wasting time say if youre train is delayed, or is that just me when I go to up to Manchester ?!
