Girl Geek Guide to TV Stands

Choosing The Right TV Storage

When it comes to adding a TV to your space, there are many ways you could go about it. Thinking back to my uni days, my TV sat contentedly on top of my desk with the DVD player stacked awkwardly on top.

No longer a broke student, investing in a TV stand sounded like a good idea, but how do you choose one that’s appropriate for your space and relatively stylish?

Here are some helpful tips on different ways to incorporate a television into a room:

  • TV Stands:

TV stands come in all shapes and sizes as well as in a variety of finishes and styles. If you have a smaller space to work with, a corner TV stand is a viable option.

Designed to fit snugly in a corner, these TV stands often feature storage space for multimedia equipment which is perfect if you’re looking to make the most of your space. TV cabinets are another option if you have a smaller space to work with. Offering a more discreet way to store your multimedia devices, TV cabinets can blend seamlessly into a room and, depending on what finish you select, can match any decor. There are also extra wide TV stands available for bigger plasma and LCD mounts.

  • Entertainment Centers:

A step up from a TV stand is an entertainment center. Usually more luxurious than your standard TV stand, entertainment centers are designed to showcase the TV as well as provide you with multimedia storage and space for your DVDs, CDs and video games.

The major downside with entertainment centers is that you need to have space for one. While there are some modestly sized entertainment centers, most are quite cumbersome and require a relatively large amount of wall space. As is true with TV stands, entertainment centers are available in a slew of styles and finishes. You can opt for a sleek, metal-framed sleek, modern entertainment center or go for a more traditional hardwood entertainment center made out of quality hardwood.

  • Wall Mounts:

If you really want to minimize clutter in your room, I suggest installing a wall-mounted TV.  For the bedroom, I recommend purchasing a flat wall mount which allows your TV to sit on your wall like a piece of framed art.

If you don’t want to take up valuable space on the top of your drawers, or add another piece of furniture to your room, a TV wall mount is an excellent choice. There are also tilt wall mounts and wall arm mounts, which make your TV viewable from more angels. A tilt wall mount allows you to tilt your television up or down while a wall arm mount allows you to move your flat panel TV from side to side. There are also wall mounts available for standard size televisions, in case you haven’t upgraded to a flat panel or LCD TV.

  • Ceiling Mounts:

While TV ceiling mounts are often associated with hospitals, airports and other commercial installations, they are a perfectly fine option if you are looking to create a space where you can comfortably lay back and watch TV. I might also suggest investing in a projection television which you install on your ceiling and it projects the image onto a screen or blank wall.

Girl Geek Verdict

As you can see, there is a multitude of ways in which you can incorporate a television into your room; the key is to find the means that works best with your space. When it comes to adding a television to a room, try and find the perfect blend of form and function, while staying within your means.
